At least he can kneel!

Well I have finished painting the robot, albeit things didn't quite go to plan.  I got interrupted when painting him, and although I had freed up all his joints as I went - I seemed to have overlooked his hip joints.    When I went to pose him and take his photo I managed to break his hip joints.

I tried to remove his hip pin, but it was beyond repair, and knowing how difficult it was to assemble his legs, I abandoned the idea, and just took the hacksaw to the spindle and stuck his hips on.   As you can see  he can kneel, (and he can stand up straight - he just can't sit any more!)

Such a shame I messed it up.  I was a tad disappointed as he had been clear gessoed before painting to prevent paint leaking into his joints (and they all moved at this stage).     Hey ho worse things happen at sea as they say - and I did manage to remedy the situation, although not as perfectly as I would have liked.

For info he was painted with Indigoblu translucent paints (I wanted some of the detail on the MDF to show through, particularly on his body).  I then overpainted with Starlights paints - sort of dry brushing the colour on, and then added some Pebeo gilding wax on the elements that appear metallic.
His eyes were painted with Pebeo Ceramic and Fantasy paints.  (Really pleased with the effect).

This view shows the base which is same as reverse and was "splodge" with Pebeo DYNA paints in black, blue/black, bluegreen and silver to match the front.

Hopefully this will be a vague step by step guide to how I decorated these MDF letters from The Works.

First apply gesso with either a brush or a sponge

Then apply White Pebeo Ceramic paint to the top side

and whilst wet dribble on Vitrail, and Prisme (or Moon) paints and then add in some ceramic paint
and run a kebab stick through the paints to mix them

When dry apply ceramic paint to the other sides and let dry in between the sides.  (I also applied a coat of resin over the top of this set.)

I also did a set to which I applied Black gesso and then applied red vitrail to the top

Whilst  red Vitrail is wet drop on some Pebeo Fantasy Moon
 with a kebab or cocktail stick

then dribbled on some Carmine Fantasy Moon, and some antique white ceramic

Finally drop in some more red vitrail (sorry about quality of picture, but you can see
the drops of red vitrail) and then draw a kebab stick through to mix

When dry apply the red vitrail to the other sides/edges

The bonus with HOME is that the letters are reversible - so I did different colours
on the front and bakc

That Halloween canvas again

You may remember that I wasn't quite "happy" with this canvas two days ago, and thought I might add some Pebeo Ceramic paint to the cat.  Well I did, BUT I also added some Fantasy paints to the eyes of the owl and the cat, and then added resin to the Owl and also the Cat, but wasn't paying attention because I hadn't allowed the black ceramic paint to dry, and the finish was a bit "weird".  

However, I like the textured finish to the cat - so not even going to try and remedy it - it's what we call a happy accident!

Mixed Media Canvasses - by Sass & Mags

When my pal Sass was visiting the other week I introduced her to mixed media painting.  The first picture is her first attempt.  As you can see from the second picture it didn't look much when she first did it - but then we mounted the A5 canvas board on an A4 canvas - result - a work of art.

Sass brushed on Pebeo blue vitrail and then dribbled various Fantasy Moon and Prisme paints over the canvas and added some gilding flakes

.... and then I attempted a canvas, and was a little bolder - no brushes were used in preparing this canvas

I poured various colours of Pebeo vitrail all over the canvas, until it ran off the board. and although they were different colours - because they all got mixed the overall effect is is a dark blue, although when you look closely you can see greens and light blues and reds.

I then dropped on various Fantasy Moon and Prisme paints using a kebab stick, and then swirled them into the Vitrail paint.  I also added the glitter vitrail in places, red vitrail and some antique white ceramic  (I like the effect of the white ceramic paint).

In both cases we painted on an A5 thin canvas board, and then mounted it on to a an A4 canvas.  This really does show off the artwork and make it easier to hang.

Mixed Media and .....

.... a little play with the youngest granddaughters.

Miniature Mixed Media Canvas

On Saturday my youngest granddaughters popped in to see me, and after an impromptu bacon butty lunch, they wanted to "raid" my Den.   It seems in future I must learn to buy 3 of everything as they all wanted to use the same things!

Having shown them the "HOME" letters that I painted with Pebeo Ceramic and Fantasy paints, they wanted to know how to do it

They all took turns in dropping some red vitrail paint onto the canvas and then choosing the Fantasy paints that they wanted to drop into the centre as well as some of the glitter vitrail.   They were fascinated by the reaction of the paints.   Needless to say it required 24 hours to dry so they didn't see the effect of their finished "splodges".

As I wasn't sure when I would see them next, I hadded a couple of splodges of my own, and when dry I carefully filled in the background with black ceramic paint, and when that was dry I added some squiggles with Pebeo Mixion and when that was tacky I added a few gilding flakes.  The edge of the board was finished off by applying two shades of gold Pebeo gilding wax.

It may only be tiny, but when the sun catches it ......... fantastic effect.

Amazing what you can do with a few kebab sticks and some paint - i.e. no brush was applied to the canvas at all.

Enamelled Letters

Been having fun over the past few days painting these little letters.

I covered them in black gesso, and then applied Pebeo black ceramic paint.  Whilst it was still wet I trailed Some Fantasy paints and some red Vitrail paint along the letters.

I then painted the inner and out edges, and finally the reverse side, and repeated what I did on the front side but with different colours.

So I can now have a red set or a green set or mix and match them.  It is of course fortunate that the letters that spell HOME are reversible!

of course should you wish you can pile them up!

Really, really pleased with the way these have turned out - the enamelled effect in real life is fantastic.
